Aquagenx, a spin-out from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill, provides low-cost, portable microbial water quality testing products that enable the monitoring of drinking water in low resource settings. More than one billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water, resulting in millions of deaths annually due to diarrhea and other preventable disease. The ability to easily and efficiently test water at the household level is crucial to solving this problem.

The Aquagenx Compartment Bag Test (CBT) was developed specifically to address this problem and eliminates the current barriers to consistent water quality testing such as lab costs, complicated scoring, and special training, enabling better monitoring efforts in places that need it most.

Raleigh-based Tethis is commercializing a technology, originated in North Carolina State University’s College of Natural Resources, to remove salt and other hazardous materials from water generated as a by-product of industrial processes, including fracking. To do this, the company uses Tethex, a biodegradable foam licensed from NC State, that binds with dissolved salts, minerals and other materials, allowing them to be removed from wastewater.

Tethex is made from a combination of readily available organic, bio-degradable materials. The product is able to absorb many times its weight in salt. There is no other known substance that can match its performance.

The treatment and disposal of saltwater and brine is a global challenge costing industry and governments billions annually. The markets for saltwater treatment include the desalination and recycling of frack flowback water – salt-laden water that is a byproduct of hydraulically fractured gas wells.

Tethis solves the risk, cost, and technical difficulties found in the treatment of highly concentrated brine waste as well as other hazardous wastes.

Plex Diagnostics is an oncology diagnostic development firm focused on simple, cost-effective, multiplexed diagnostic tools. Patent-pending technology combines serum biomarkers in a proprietary algorithm to create predictive models that can identify the early creation of cancer, or carcinogenesis. Plex believes predictive models will provide clinicians with the tools necessary to make informed decisions that result in better outcomes and reduced healthcare costs for their patients.

The UNC Liver Center-spinout’s first product (HCCpleX) has demonstrated the ability to detect hepatocellular carcinoma (the most common type of liver cancer) as early as one year prior to the current screening method. Early detection of HCC leads to better outcomes and dramatic cost-savings due to less costly treatment options.
