Clinical Sensors is a Chapel Hill, North Carolina medical device start-up focused on the development and commercialization of simple to use and fast testing devices for diagnosing serious medical conditions. The technology platform is based on patent-pending selective sensor membranes and microfluidic, lab-on-a-chip technologies. Their first product is a point-of-care device to measure the level of nitric oxide, which is elevated in the bloodstream in certain serious medical conditions such as sepsis.

Sepsis, a severe blood infection, is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. (and 1st in non-cardiac intensive care units.) The company’s long-term objectives include development of testing devices for wound healing, prognosis of (new) drug therapies, multiplex diagnostics, and expanded POC detection platforms incorporating biomarkers and devices.

Raleigh-based Joosy, Inc. is building the next generation of content delivery technologies for consumer and corporate clouds. It lowers the cost of content delivery through streaming while improving the end-user experience, without compression.

JoosyCloud is a proprietary software product that integrates with their current bandwidth solution and saves streaming video providers money by transparently and efficiently utilizing their audience’s community cloud to process and share the video. Our intelligent software requires no additional download by users, who enjoy more reliable video while their video provider saves money.

By making microservers of their viewers, JoosyCloud can save customers 50% or more on their monthly bandwidth bills. In return, JoosyCloud charges a dramatically reduced price per GB of data served through our system when compared to a Content Delivery Network.

Keona Health’s Online Nurse Advice solution reduces time spent by health care providers on unreimbursed phone calls. Time which can then be spent on seeing more patients and increasing revenue. Telephone triage calls are typically not reimbursed and cost healthcare providers $15-$20 per call out of their own pockets.

Designed by nurses, Keona Health offloads phone calls onto the health care provider’s website. Patients go to the clinic’s website and ask questions using a privately labeled Online Nurse Advice solution. Patients fill out their own histories using an intelligent interview with the industry standard Schmitt-Thompson telephone triage protocols.

Keona Health automatically create a summary clinic note for a nurse to review, along with guidance on assessment and educational content. The nurse reviews it and responds to patients often with a single click. Finally, all the information is copied into the EHR and routed to the appropriate provider.

It’s a fully cloud and web-based solution so there is no IT installation required. It was designed by nurses to be easy for other nurses to learn, so training just needs one meeting. For more information, check out Keona Health’s whitepaper presenting its clinical trial at UNC-Chapel Hill.

SEAL Innovation, led by entrepreneurs and emergency and pediatric physicians, delivers wearable safety, health, and medical products that maximize wellness and improve quality of life. SEAL SwimSafe™, the Company’s premier product, is a wearable swim monitor and drowning detection system that detects, and notifies lifeguards, parents and other guardians of a swimmer in distress.

It reduces fear, enhances the experience of swimming, and minimizes drowning – a leading cause of accidental death of all children and killer of more than 1,000,000 people globally.

In advance of general availability of the SEAL SwimSafe™ slated early 2014, the Company has visibility including bookings with YMCAs and other leading aquatics facilities.  Its go-to-market is bolstered by endorsements and advocacy from USA Olympic Swimmers including Cullen Jones, nationally known coaches including David Marsh, and national learn to swim programs.

With this traction, SEAL Innovation is well positioned to immediately capitalize a $4 billion market opportunity to provide SEAL SwimSafe™ to owners of 314,000 commercial aquatics facilities (e.g. YMCAs, community pools, water parks), and 8.4 million residential pools as well as 4 million heads of active swimming households.

To date, the Company has raised over $1.2 Million including $775,000 in the current round in 2013. Going forward, the company seeks to raise an additional $4 million in staged financing.

Chapel Hill-based Allotropica Technologies, Inc, has a proprietary graphene manufacturing process that enables high volume, low-cost fabrication of graphene, with an initial market focus on graphene-based electrodes for ultracapacitors. Allotropica’s unique, high-value, enabling component can readily be incorporated into the existing manufacturing processes of established ultracapacitors.

Allotropica’s graphene offers the unprecedented ability to fabricate high-surface area isolated graphene sheets
in a scalable manner, unlocking the requisite physical properties for achieving high-energy high-power-density devices. Initially, Allotropica plans to grow with the ultracapacitor market because its high-performance graphene electrodes can readily be incorporated into the existing manufacturing processes..

The worldwide ultracapacitor market is predicted to be ~$400 million by 2015 and is set to grow at 19% CAGR [Frost
and Sullivan 2009]. While this market research does take into account some of the technological improvements that
will happen within the ultracapacitor market it does not take into account the recent advancements of graphene, which
should increase the overall size of the ultracapacitor market.

– May 2012: NASA Langley Research Center grants exclusive license to Allotropica for liquid crystal polymer resins. The resins were originally invented for lightweight composite materials by a team of Langley researchers in the Center’s Advanced Materials and Processing Branch. Chapel Hill-based LotusBioEFx is a life sciences company with the primary aim of developing metallic alloy additive technologies that are highly effective at killing a wide array of microbes including many hospital-associated organisms. LotusBioEFx’s innovative technology is an alloy of several metals, each particle proven effective against a wide array of microbes (e.g. Staph aureus, Enterobacter, E. coli, etc.).

Particle generation technology allows the regulation of the particle size from a diameter of several hundred microns down to 5 nanometers. The active metallic ions are non-toxic, do not leach, and they maintain microbial kill and anti-biofilm effectiveness for extended periods.

LotusBioEFx is focusing on incorporating this technology into frequently used medical devices like vascular catheters as 6% of central venous catheters contribute to bloodstream infections. Competitive technologies have traditionally been based on antibiotic coatings with limited proven clinical efficacy, short duration of action and high costs.

The Contact Lens Refresh Card is designed to improve eye healthcare for contact lens users worldwide by creating a new way to care for contact lenses. Refresh has designed a patent-pending package that is comprehensive but convenient to carry at all times based on months of work, hundreds of user interviews, and over 30 design iterations.

By starting with the user’s needs first, Refresh delivers on our promise to them to eliminate the pain of contact lens daily care. The Refresh Innovations team is obsessed with creating beautifully designed products that seamlessly integrate into daily life.

86% of contact lens wearers have been in a situation where they needed to remove their lenses, but did not have a case to put them in. Contact lens use significantly increases the risk of eye infection, often due to misuse.

The Contact Lens Refresh Card is the solution by seamlessly integrating into daily life without compromising functionality, quality or safety.

Sanitation Creations offers environmentally-friendly, hygienic sanitation solutions that are odorless, waterless, and economical. Their first commercial product is the Dungaroo – an odorless, waterless, easy-to empty toilet that can be used anywhere. The patent-pending system seals waste in specially lined bags which block odor and treat the waste. The individual bags are collected in a containment bag in the base of the Dungaroo and can be disposed of without special equipment. The startup is a spinout of UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health.

The objective of the Dungaroo is to innovate the port-a-potty industry in developed countries, while working towards improving sanitation in developing countries. The Dungaroo marks the first progression in the industry since the advent of the port-a-potty. Since no special equipment is needed to empty it, expensive septic trucks are not needed. Ultimately, Sanitation Creations aims to support people around the world without access to healthful sanitation, be a successful triple bottom line company focusing on People, Profits, and Planet, and use human excreta effectively, capturing the nutrients to make a value-added by-product instead of creating waste water.
